Match focus:
Caroline Wozniacki vs. Mandy Minella
Wozniacki won''t be making her YEC appearance for the 2nd year in a row, showing how stagnant her game has been for the past 2 years. Still, she manages to be seeded number 1 here and will be against the home girl, Mandy Minella. If anyone remembers, Caroline controversially retired against another Luxembourg player, Anne Kremer a few years ago, with one game away from the match. Will the Luxembourg crowd remember this shameful match? And will Caroline repeat this against Minella? Sorry, but the Dane needs to points now. She will try everything to win this match, and Minella will need to blow her off the court. Not saying that Mandy doesn't have the game, but she is just too inconsistent.
Pick: Wozniacki in 2 sets
Sabine Lisicki vs. Donna Vekic
Big things were predicted for Donna, after her Birmingham final appearance. However, she kind of just fizzled out, failing to replicate any type of success on tour. Will she have her last bright spot of her season by besting Sabine? The German withdrew from her last tournament with an injury, and it's surprising to see her play her instead of resting it. It's the last tournament of the year, so wouldn't it be better to rest the back for the next year? Some silly planning here from the Lisicki camp and I wouldn't be surprised if Sabine retires again.
Pick: Vekic wins via retirement
Elena Vesnina vs. Yaroslava Shvedova
Former Russian Shvedova, will meet the breakthrough Russian of the year, Vesnina. Elena has made it clear that she will not participate in the Fed Cup final this year, and I'm not too sure of how the Moscow crowd will react. However, the Russians need to remember that Vesnina has always been available whenever she is needed. So they need to cut her some slack for playing the 2nd tier YEC when she has finally qualified for it. Shvedova is still as inconsistent as ever, so I expect no surprises here.
Pick: Vesnina in 2 sets
Sure win bets: Yvonne Meusburger, Karin Knapp, Daniela Hantuchova
Upset alert: Hsieh Su-Wei, Sabine Lisicki, Klara Zakopalova
