Rome day 3: Will Sloane silence her haters again?

Schedule of play:

Match focus:

Sloane Stephens vs. Kiki Bertens

Surprise, surprise! Sloane takes out Flavia Pennetta in convincing fashion in her first round. However, I wouldn't read too much into that as Flavia is frankly, over-the-hill. Same can be said of Schiavone, who's struggling to cope with younger players. Kiki possesses a powerful game and she thrives on clay courts. Sloane is adaptable but clay is not her strength. The American should have some trouble with Kiki's game. I would give the edge to Sloane if this is played on hard courts, but the slow surface favours Kiki.

Pick: Bertens in 3 sets

Bojana Jovanovski vs. Jelena Jankovic

All Serbian clash here after Bojana upset the clueless Wozniacki in the first round. Jovanovski hasn't won a match since January but she managed to squeeze out a win against the Dane. Shows how badly she is playing now. Jankovic is in better form and should take out Jovanovski. However, things always get a bit heated when players of the same country play. Jovanovski might win a set, but Jelena should prevail.

Pick: Jankovic in 3 sets

Varvara Lepchenko vs. Maria Kirilenko

Varvara is a dangerous opponent for anyone except the top 5. Her spinning lefty game gives her opponents fits and she's capable of pulling off some upsets. Will Kirilenko be her latest casualty? Both ladies are equally adept on clay, so it'll be a case of who breaks down first. Lepchenko's game involves more risk compared to Kirilenko's steady and unspectacular game. Varvara has the game to defeat the Russian, but I believe Maria's consistency will come out on top.

Pick: Kirilenko in 3 sets

Sure win bets: Maria Sharapova, Li Na, Roberta Vinci

Upset alert: Sloane Stephens, Samantha Stosur
