Madrid SF: Field wide open

Petra Kvitova vs. Simona Halep

With Serena's shock withdrawal, the field is blown wide open now. Halep was steady in her win over Ivanovic, showing a top player mentality where she learns from her mistakes. She will be at the advantage against the volatile Kvitova. Halep's game can be overpowered, but the player needs to be on song for almost all her shots. It will be a tough task for Petra to be on target all the time. I think Halep is primed for another big title, and I think this might be it.

Pick: Halep in 2 sets

Agnieszka Radwanska vs. Maria Sharapova

As expected, Sharapova and Li was a messy affair where Maria prevailed eventually. She can take a breather now as she will be up against someone whose game matches well with hers. Just 2 weeks ago in Stuttgart, Sharapova beat Radwanska convincingly, and I think the same is going to repeat here. Maria is not intimidated by Radwanska's craft, and will punish any fancy shots that Agnieszka throws at her. Despite not playing her best tennis, Sharapova is crafting out a nifty winning streak on the red surface, cementing her status as one of the tour's top clay court players. And against Radwanska, whose least favourite surface is clay, she is clearly at an advantage.

Pick: Sharapova in 3 sets
