Poor Julia. She cannot seem to catch a break as she draws recent Washington champion, Magdalena Rybarikova in her opening match. Julia is just plain struggling no matter who is across the court. She needs to take some time off to sort herself out. Losing every other match is going to erode her already fragile confidence. I will be very surprised if Julia finds a way to win this match.

Jelena Jankovic vs. Sabine Lisicki
This will be Lisicki's first match after her final appearance in Wimbledon. Will she be able to recover from such a disappointment? Well, Jankovic herself isn't having such a good US hardcourt season as well, but she has some matches under her belt, not like Sabine. I believe Sabine needs a couple of matches to completely get over her demolition in Wimbledon, so Jelena should win this.

Daniela Hantuchova vs. Andrea Petkovic
Tough match to call her with similar ranked players. Petkovic enjoyed a fine week in Washington, reaching the finals, while Hantuchova is enjoying her doubles partnership with Martina Hingis. Will the pairing rejuvenate the Slovak and translate it into singles success? Well, Petkovic is the faster player here so she will have the advantage. Daniela will have to attack Petkovic's serve and serve well herself to have an easy win.
