Washington, Carlsbad QF: Samantha the slight favourite

Washington:

Andrea Petkovic vs. Paula Ormaechea
Sorana Cirstea vs. Alize Cornet
Ekaterina Makarova vs. Monica Niculescu
Angelique Kerber vs. Magdalena Rybarikova

Carlsbad:

Virginie Razzano vs. Petra Kvitova
Roberta Vinci vs. Ana Ivanovic
Samantha Stosur vs. Agnieszka Radwanska
Victoria Azarenka vs. Urszula Radwanska

Match focus:

Sorana Cirstea vs. Alize Cornet

2 players at the opposite end of the aggressive spectrum. Sorana is ultra aggressive, having a go at any given ball, while Alize's game doesn't allow her to be aggressive anyway. The courts in Carlsbad are pretty slow, so it will favour the Frenchwoman. However, if Sorana can swing freely and make her shots, Alize might be blown off the court quickly. A real toss up, but I think the aggressor should win. A winner is one who takes their chances.

Pick: Cirstea in 3 sets

Roberta Vinci vs. Ana Ivanovic

Ana Ivanovic is the lower ranked player, but she possess a superior record over Vinci. However, Ana suffered a humiliating double bagel last year in Montreal against Vinci. Not too sure how that loss will affect Ana, but she knows Vinci's game well. This tournament seems to be looking good for Ivanovic, toppling the favoured Cibulkova. I think Ana will continue her form and edge out Vinci in 3 close sets.

Pick: Ivanovic in 3 sets

Samantha Stosur vs. Agnieszka Radwanska

Interestingly, Stosur leads the heads to heads against the top seed Radwanska. The Pole's counter-punching game is not as effective against Sam's spinny game, and Radwanska cannot return as aggressively as she wants to. Stosur just needs to keep her mishits low and go for her massive forehand. The Aussie seems to be playing herself to form, so I expect an upset here.

Pick: Stosur in 3 sets

Sure win bets: Andrea Petkovic, Petra Kvitova, Victoria Azarenka
Upset alert: Alize Cornet, Roberta Vinci, Agnieszka Radwanska
