New Haven day 1: Last warm up before US Open

Schedule:

Match focus:

Monica Puig vs. Hsieh Su-Wei

Puig is the rising star of WTA and she will be tested against the streaky Hsieh. Su-Wei's unorthodox game might derail Monica for a while. But I think once Puig gets used to the balls, she will plummet Su-Wei to submission. Monica's only weakness now is her mental game. Her stroke production is already perfect. Under the right guidance, she has a chance to reach the top of the game.

Pick: Puig in 3 sets

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova vs. Sorana Cirstea

Funny how confidence can be such an important element in the game. At their best, I believe Pavlyuchenkova's game is superior to Cirstea's ball bashing game. However, with the Russian's confidence in the pits, Sorana is the favourite to take this match. Not too sure what Pavlyuchenkova should do to stop this downward spiral. It appears that she doesn't have a real coach or a permanent fixture in her team. Maybe she needs someone to be with her for the long term, not like Hingis who only last for about 3 tournaments.

Pick: Cirstea in 2 sets

Urszula Radwanska vs. Petra Kvitova

Kvitova continues to be unpredictable, but she should be able to take this match against the lesser Radwanska. Urszula probably had to attend the funeral like Agnieszka, and would be pretty much affected by that family matter. Kvitova will be able to punish Urszula's serve and dominate her. However, if Kvitova loses this, this might be the spark that ignites the fire. Petra will realise that continuing in mediocrity is not going to cut it for her and redevote herself to the game again.

Pick: Kvitova in 2 sets

Sure win bets: Ekaterina Makarova, Caroline Wozniacki, Sloane Stephens
Upset alerts: Hsieh Su-Wei, Stephanie Voegele
