US Open report card: Pennetta not done yet

A+: Serena Williams

Oldest Grand Slam winner at 32, claims slam number 17. Equals Federer's tally. If Roger is GOAT, Serena should be up there too.

A: Flavia Pennetta

I had written Flavia off due to her lacklustre results this year. However, she proved me wrong by defeating the top 2 Italian players and reaching her first semi-final here in US Open.

A-: Victoria Azarenka

Never say die attitude. Mental strength probably only second to Serena.

B+: Ekaterina Makarova

Impressive victory over Radwanska and pushed Li Na to the limit. Seems to be harnessing her full potential.

B: Daniela Hantuchova

Made full use of a collapsed draw, reaching her first QF since 2008.

B-: Camila Giorgi

Became the talk of the tournament with her relentless hitting and sweet looks. Will be someone to watch in the future if she can keep producing the results.

C+: Alison Riske

Wildcard makes it to the 4th round, upsetting the terrible Kvitova. Will definitely be a top 50 player mainstay next year.

C: Ana Ivanovic

Made the 4th round for the last 3 years. But always stopped by higher ranked players. Her level of play now is probably just going to make her reach the last 16 consistently, but never causing any upsets.

C-: Simona Halep

Impressive in her demolition of Kirilenko, but suffered the cruel rain delay against Pennetta. Will need to pace herself before a slam to avoid running out of energy again.

D: Caroline Wozniacki

Nothing has changed. Her passive game again blown away by a fearless player.

E: Petra Kvitova

Reportedly sick, but seems like an excuse for her uninspired play. Seems to be content dwelling in the top 20 though. No motivation to improve whatsoever.

F: Samantha Stosur

A former champion? What a flop to lose to Duval on the biggest stage, which she is accustomed to.
