US Open QF: Experience trumps youth

Upset of the previous day:

Flavia Pennetta def. Simona Halep 6-2 7-6(3)

Red hot Simona Halep must be cursing at the gods for wrecking her momentum. Down a set and a break in the 2nd set, she found the rhythem and was serving for the set at 40-30 when heavy rain fell. This gave Pennetta the much needed break as she was tiring out from the long drawn rallies. Pennetta seized the opportunity and grabbed the win with a sizzling backhand winner. This will be the Italian's 4th quarter-final here and she will be hoping to advance to her first semi-final here in US Open. Hopefully she gets it.

Match focus:

Li Na vs. Ekaterina Makarova

Li Na will be the favourite after the form she displayed against Jankovic in the 4th round. The Chinese just dismantled the Serb with clean and aggressive tennis. Makarova will need to be more aggressive than Li, (which is almost impossible) and end the points at the net. This is the Russian's first quarter-final here in US Open, so she is bound to have a few nerves. Li is used to the big stage and will use her experience to win this match.

Pick: Li in 2 sets

Serena Williams vs. Carla Suarez Navarro

Serena Williams is just rampaging through the draw and will no doubt be the absolute favourite against Spaniard, Carla Suarez Navarro. This is Carla's first quarter-final appearance here and there's no bigger pressure than facing Serena Williams in USA, in front of the US crowd in the biggest tennis arena in the world. Carla should be happy that she reached this far and probably wouldn't mind being thrashed by the great Serena.

Pick: Williams in 2 easy sets
