Match focus:

Venus Williams vs. Paula Ormaechea

Paula who? Ranked 122, this young Argentine first made an impression at the Australian Open, reaching the 2nd round after qualifying. After that, she had a decent showing in Bogota, reaching the quarter-finals. She faces a tough draw in the form of Venus Williams here in Paris. Should be easy pickings for the American. Venus will be looking forward to get some warm-up matches and Paula is the perfect match for her.

Pick: Venus in straight sets

Kai-Chen Chang vs. (WC) Irena Pavlovic

2 unknowns battling out in the first round. So why is this interesting? Firstly, Chang has been on a 5 match losing streak and Pavlovic has been awarded a wildcard from the French Tennis Federation. Pavlovic qualified for the Australian Open and gave a good account of herself in her first round match. However, she's very inconsistent as she can even lose in 25K challenger events to unknowns. As for Chang, she made a name for herself by upsetting then number 1, Dinara Safina in Tokyo. However, she faded back to oblivion since then. This should be a match where the player which stinks less will win.

Pick: Pavlovic in 3 sets

(WC) Melanie Oudin vs. Johanna Larsson

Melanie Oudin defies all odds and wins a challenger event to achieve this wildcard entry. However, this American lass went back to her losing ways ever since, barely winning any matches. Larsson on the other hand, just reached the quarter-finals of Strasbourg. Even if Melanie wants to BELIEVE that she has a chance, there is hardly any.

Pick: Larsson in straight sets

Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez vs. (Q) Eva Birnerova

Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez is returning from an injury but hasn't won many matches lately. Her only wins this year is against walking bye, Yakimova and Gamiz (who?). It's interesting to see that she chose to enter the qualifying draw of Strasbourg to gain more match play even though her ranking was more than enough to get her to the main draw. It backfired though as she lost to Mirjana Lucic in the 2nd round of qualifying. Eva Birnerova was as high ranked as 59 back in 2007 and she has already played 3 matches on the red clay. Will she take out the wily Spaniard? Or will Maria Jose finally get her groove back?

Pick: Birnerova in 3 sets

(Q) Heidi El Tabakh (CAN) v. Aleksandra Wozniak (CAN)

Clash of the Canucks here in the first round. Heidi came through qualifying and has some decent results in the challenger events, winning a couple of 25Ks. However, Aleksandra is of another league. The top ranked Canadian doesn't like clay but is respectable on it. Also, the head-to-head favours Wozniak more, including a 6-0 6-1 thrashing back in 2005. Shouldn't have any surprises provided Wozniak is healthy.

Pick: Wozniak in 2 easy sets

Sure win bets: Samantha Stosur, Lucie Safarova, Angelique Kerber
Upset alert: Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, Kai-Chen Chang, Anna Tatishvili
