Upset of the day:
Olga Puchkova def. Venus Williams 4-6 6-4 7-5
Oh goodness... Venus was clearly bothered by her back injury and despite it, didn't retire. It was a wonder that it was even this close. Poor Venus. If she cannot play 3 to 4 consecutive matches without straining her body, maybe it's time to hang up her racket. The occasional wins in smaller tournaments are obviously not good enough for someone of Venus's calibre. If she is wise enough, she might take a a lengthy break to sort out her ailments and come back strong in Wimbledon. Olga reaches her second ever WTA final since 2006, where she was unceremoniously double bagelled by Bartoli in Quebec City. She will probably lose in the final. but she won't lose as badly as the last time she played in one.
Bethanie Mattek-Sands def. Su-Wei Hsieh 7-5 6-2
Hsieh's title defense stops here as she stumbles against Bethanie Mattek-Sands. It's not a shame to lose to Bethanie though as she has been a top 30 player before. Hsieh is obviously not 100% with the tapes on her arms but this stubborn girl will continue to play. I think she doesn't want to skip KL as this is where she won her first title. However, with Indian Wells and Miami coming, she stands to lose major opportunities to add points to her ranking. Let's hope she does the right thing and rest her body before it breaks down.
