Upset of the day:
Laura Robson def. Petra Kvitova 2-6 6-3 11-9
On the ATP, the men get lifted by their Davis Cup victory to have stellar seasons the next year. Examples are Fernando Verdasco, Janko Tipsarevic and many more. It seems like the opposite for the women. After winning the Fed Cup, the Czech women have been abysmal. And leading the collapse is their number 1 player, Kvitova. I don't mean to be critical, but she is in no shape to compete. Lazy footwork, sluggish movement, ugly errors. I cannot believe this woman was within touching distance of the top spot last year. Petra needs time off to train her butt off to get back in shape. She will never run around the court like Wozniacki, but a slight improvement in movement means a lot to such a big hitter like her. Anyway, it was quite a horror show for those who managed to watch the match. Laura will need to lift her level against Sloane if she wants to advance to the 4th round.
Bojana Jovanovski def. Lucie Safarova 7-5 7-5
Looks like the Czechs just forgot how to play tennis. Lucie Safarova, part of the winning Fed Cup team, is ousted by Bojana Jovanovski. Bojana led 5-2 in the second set before Lucie staged her comeback. At 5 all, Lucie seemed to remmember she wasn't supposed to win and lost the next 8 points quickly. What a nutcase. All the Czech girls are now out, including Andrea Hlavackova, Lucie Hradecka and Klara Zakopalova. Not a good representation for Fed Cup.
Svetlana Kuznetsova def. Hsieh Su-Wei 6-2 6-1
Looks like Svetlana is back in business. She rampaged through a potentially tricky opponent in Hsieh Su-Wei in this 2nd round encounter. With the exit of Sara Errani, Svetlana will stand a very good chance to advance to the quarters. Hsieh shouldn't be too deflated as she did lose to a former Grand Slam champion. There are always events like Kuala Lumpur and Guangzhou for her to win.
Kimiko Date-Krumm def. Shahar Peer 6-2 7-5
Kimiko Date-Krumm defies the years and becomes the oldest woman to reach a 3rd round of a Grand Slam. Can anyone spell A-M-A-Z-I-N-G? This Japanese woman refused to hang her racket after a dismal year last year and her perseverance paid off this time! Peer really should have lost in her first round so she shouldn't be too upset about this. Kimiko faces Bojana Jovanovski next, another very winnable match. Go Kimiko! Prove these youngsters wrong!
Jamie Hampton def. Luksika Kumkhum 6-1 6-2
I was impressed by this Thai girl's game in her first round and she's out to prove me wrong. Her casual approach to the game proved to be her undoing as she went down easily against someone who directed her power back to her. Jamie played a very smart match, and Kumkhum just hit error after error. The Thai needs to improve on her serve and attitude if she wants to consistently challenge the top girls. Jamie will now meet Victoria Azarenka in the 3rd round. It will be a good learning experience for Jamie, although she is bound to lose.
