Upset of the day:

Dominika Cibulkova (SVK) d [3] Sara Errani (ITA) | 6 - 2 | 6 - 1 |

Sara Errani and Dominika Cibulkova have similar builds, but they play an almost completely different game. Cibulkova goes on the attack from the word go while Errani is content with rallying the whole day. However, like the saying, "fortune always favours the brave", Cibulkova emerged the deserving winner by taking her chances. Errani will always be troubled on quick hard courts by players who can really punish her abysmal serve. Every service point starts with her on the back foot, which is very tiring for any player. Errani's exit was the only blemish where the rest of the top 4 seeds emerged victorious. With various players slumping, Cibulkova has a good chance to break into the top 10 if she continues her stellar results.

Tsvetana Pironkova (BUL) d [3] Klara Zakopalova (CZE) | 3 - 6 | 6 - 4 | 6 - 2 |

This is very much a surprise as Klara was blitzing all her opponents this year and almost beat Li Na last week. Tsvetana should be complimented though as she improved her forehand and it isn't that much of a liability anymore. Pironkova likes to chip her forehand when she's not confident or when she's tight. In this match, she hit through all her forehands, which is a very good sign. Her ability to turn defense into offense is also remarkable. Tough one for Klara to lose as she was the favourite to clinch the title. However, we might be looking at another possible winner right here if Tsvetana continues her form.

Monica Niculescu (ROU) d Shuai Peng (CHN) | 3 - 6 | 6 - 4 | 6 - 4 |

As expected, Peng couldn't find the patience and stamina to outlast the ultimate junkballer on WTA. There were numerous chances for Peng to break Monica's serve, but almost all of them resulted in ugly errors from the Chinese's racket. While I do think Peng's game has improved, she needs a good rhythm to get into her zone; which Niculescu is very good at disrupting. I am not a fan of the Romanian's game, but the tour needs someone with a quirky game to keep the players in check.
