Montreal final: Safarova chokes, resurgence of Kvitova and Li

Li Na def. Lucie Safarova 6-3 3-6 7-5

Leading 5-1 in the third set, Lucie Safarova suffered a huge choke as she lost the plot completely and allowed Li Na to win 6 games in a row to clinch the match. With this win, Li improves her heads to heads with Lucie to 6-1. Maybe Safarova has a mental block facing Li after all. Li advances to her first final since Rome and signaled her return to top 10. After disappointing weeks in Wimbledon and Olympics, Li must be glad to win some matches and regain her confidence. Hopefully this will give her confidence a boost and do well in the US Open.

Petra Kvitova def. Caroline Wozniacki 3-6 6-2 6-3

After being completely MIA in the first set, Kvitova wakes up and bulldozes her way into the final, crushing Caroline in the last 2 sets. This match is a classic example of why Wozniacki will never win a slam. Once her opponent raises her level, there is nothing much she can do. It's not like she isn't trying, but the skills are just not there. How did this girl dominate the 2010 and 2011 season is perhaps the greatest mystery of recent times. Petra finally clinches her first top 10 win of the season, and will look to win her first title in 2012.

Montreal final:

Li Na vs Petra Kvitova

Both these girls have been struggling with their forms lately but silenced their critics this week in Montreal. Petra is perhaps the more consistent of the 2, losing to quality opponents in her slam losses, but is still without a title in 2012. This is a far cry from last year, where she won 6 titles. For someone who claims to hate the American hard court season, she has done extremely well to reach the final, although the field is quite depleted. The 2 slam champions of 2011 will try to prove that their slam wins were not flukes and win their first title of this year. The heads to heads between these 2 players is 2-1 in favour of Li, with Li's lastest victory coming from Sydney this year, where Li came back from behidn to beat Petra. I will have to give Kvitova the advantage as she is comparatively the more steady player. Li is too hot and cold and might blow a huge lead away. If Kvitova can keep her level as seen in her matches against Bartoli and Wozniacki, there is little Li can do.

Pick: Kvitova in 2 sets
