US Open: Catch-up updates

Sorry for the lack of updates for the past 3 days... Well, I will talk about the main matches which happened for the last 3 days.

(6) Angelique Kerber def. Venus Williams 6-2 5-7 7-5

As hard as she tried, Venus Williams fell again to Angelique Kerber for the 3rd time this year. As expected, the scoreline is closer, but Williams was unable to get the win. Venus hit a staggering number of 60 unforced errors in this match, and yet kept it so close. If she could just reduce that number by a teeny bit, she might have won this match. Kudos to Kerber for fighting despite being 4-2 down in the third set. This German girl is looking impressive and might be able to defend her semi-finalist points last year.

Laura Robson def. (9) Li Na 6-4 6-7(5) 6-2

Wow... I think we are looking at the future of tennis here. After upsetting Kim Clijsters, Laura Robson takes out another Grand Slam champion, Li Na in 3 tight sets. You often see players losing right after they made a huge upset, but Laura kept calm and hit Li off the court. Well, Li wasn't her best in this match; but to be able to stay focused despite some shady umpiring is impressive. Laura will face Samantha Stosur in the 4th round and I won't be surprised if she takes Stosur out as well.

(2) Agnieszka Radwanska def. (30) Jelena Jankovic 6-3 7-5

Just when you thought Jankovic is back, she throws in this performance to remind you how low she has sunk. All Radwanska had to do was to return the ball back and wait for Jelena to miss. Just a horrible display of tennis from both players. The loser isn't Jankovic, it's the viewers who had the misfortune of witnessing the world number 2 doing absolutely nothing to win this match.

(20) Roberta Vinci def. (13) Dominika Cibulkova 6-2 7-5

Roberta Vinci is playing some good ball recently as she defeated Cibulkova in straight sets to advance to her first 4th round in US Open. Vinci played very well to scrap pass Shvedova in her previous round and seems to have Cibulkova's number. This is her 4th straight win over the Slovak. With this win, Vinci reaches her career high ranking of 17 at the grand old age of 29. Great to see that players with variety can still have their place in the top 20.

Andrea Hlavackova def. (12) Maria Kirilenko 5-7 6-4 6-4

Despite failing to qualify for the US Open in her previous 5 tries, Hlavackova breaks through this year in spectacular fashion as she reaches her first 4th round of a Grand Slam. Kirilenko was strangely subdued and listless for this match and took a medical timeout. Maybe she's not 100% healthy. But credit must be given for the Czech for not giving up and staying calm. Andrea will face Serena Williams next, so she will probably end her journey in the 4th round. But I'm sure this is something Andrea will remember for the rest of her career.
