Upset of the day:

Ekaterina Makarova def. Marion Bartoli 6-7(4) 6-3 6-4

I didn't believe in Makarova given how she lost her previous matches against Bartoli, but she proved me wrong. Despite losing a close first set, she fought back brilliantly and won the 2nd set with authority. She raced to a 5-0 in the third before Bartoli went on a rampage, breaking serve twice to bring the match back on serve. You could see Ekaterina struggling and doubting herself after losing such a huge lead. But Marion somehow decided to help her in the last 2 points. One error and another double fault sends the Russian into the 4th round. What a waste of time Marion. You might as well lose the set 6-0 if you are going to throw it away like this. Makarova will now face Kerber to equal her performance last year. Will she continue her love affair with Melbourne?

Julia Goerges def. Zheng Jie 6-3 1-6 7-5

Julia Goerges fights her way into the 4th round with a gusty win over Zheng Jie. After showing what she's capable of in the first set, she goes away in the second to lose it in a lopsided manner. Her out balls were ridiculous. Down a break in the third set with Zheng serving for the match, you could almost see tears from Julia's eyes. However, something sparked her fire and she went on a tear, winning the next 3 games to win this tightly contested match. Zheng's Achilles heel will always be the serve. Once Julia connected with her returns, there was nothing much Jie can do. Another Chinese awaits her in the 4th round. Can she topple Li to upset the whole country of China?

Maria Sharapova def. Venus Williams 6-1 6-3

Looks like the Maria express is almost unstoppable. Venus Williams didn't swallow a double bagel, but she only got 4 games off a red hot Sharapova. It was apparent that Venus' game wasn't as impressive as her heydays, but she continues to press on. Maria was prepared and played a clean match, aided by Venus' errors as well. Tough to pass the verdict on Venus' comeback. She won't be a contender for the majors definitely, but her continual play shows her passion for the game, and her determination to not let her sickness get to her. Sharapova will now take on Flipkens. More bagels from the Sharapova bakery?
