(1) Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) d. Arantxa Rus (NED) 61 62

Wozniacki seems to be back on track after taking out Rus easily. Arantxa isn't an easy first round player given that she has the power to hit you off court and Caro seemed to handle the assaults well. So is the real Caroline back? It is too early to say but I would say with this scoreline, she is truly back. It's better for Caroline to revert back to her "pushing" game even though it won't win her a slam. At least she will not struggle against scrubs and can assure herself of at least a top 20 ranking.

Sílvia Soler-Espinosa (ESP) d. (5) Julia Goerges (GER) 16 76(5) 62

As expected, Julia Goerges fails spectacularly again when she is expected to win. This German girl is in dire need of a sports psychologist as she just doesn't use her brains on court and fully utilize her powerful game. Just spraying everywhere without a care of where the opponent is or the scoreline. If you watched her performance today, you would have wondered if this is the same player who took out Radwanska in Olympics earlier. Just embarrassing and I don't know how low Julia can sink further.

(LL) Chang Kai-Chen (TPE) d. (1) Marion Bartoli (FRA) 43 ret. (gastrointestinal illness)

Dear Marion, had too much Ma La steamboat? It is silly to travel halfway across the world just to retire in her first match. It seems like Marion Bartoli is always injured or near-death in her retirements. And by watching her practice sessions, it's easy to see why. The quirky and strenuous practice session is really too much for a man, let alone a woman like Marion. Maybe it's time to tone down on the crazy antics on the practice courts and focus more on conditioning the body?

(Q) Nudnina Luangnam (THA) d. Jarmila Gajdosova (AUS) 67(5) 64 62

With this loss, Jarmila is on a 9 match losing streak starting from Roland Garros in May. I have no idea what's going on with her but this slump is very worrying. I know she had a tough divorce last year but why is her slump only starting this year? Jarmila's game is very high risk and when your confidence is low, you just cannot keep the balls in court. The Australian needs to take a break or go to the challenger level to regain her confidence before it's too late.
