Varvara Lepchenko (USA) d. (12) Dominika Cibulkova (SVK) 64 64
(WC) Aleksandra Wozniak (CAN) d. (13) Jelena Jankovic (SRB) 62 63

(2) Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) d. Mona Barthel (GER) 46 63 76(5)

Radwanska starts her quest for number 1 by squeaking past slumping Mona Barthel in 3 tight sets. It seems like Mona only brings her best against top players, as she pushed Azarenka all the way earlier this year as well. If Victoria fails to reach the quarter-finals and Agnieszka wins this tournament, the Polish girl will reach number 1. I am very sure that everyone in WTA is praying for Victoria to cling onto the top ranking because the last thing WTA needs is another dubious number 1. Well, Radwanska does have a Grand Slam final in her points; but the rest of her results compromises of early shock exits in the biggest events. Another Wozniacki in the making? Very possible.

Roberta Vinci (ITA) d. (11) Ana Ivanovic (SRB) 60 60

As if losing to Vinci isn't bad enough, Ana Ivanovic does the impossible by losing with a double bagel. This is absolutely for a professional to lose this badly. The tennis that Ana played wasn't tennis. It was utter crap. 10 winners with 33 errors. I think I can play better than that. Hard to believe that Ana was a former champion 6 years ago. As usual, I'm sure Ana will say there's nothing she can do except work harder for her next tournament. But, this girl has some serious issues to address. She seems too desperate to get back into the top 10 but failed spectacularly everytime. Let's just hope she doesn't go into another freefall, like her compatriot Jankovic.

Varvara Lepchenko (USA) d. (12) Dominika Cibulkova (SVK) 64 64

Need more proof that Carlsbad was the premier event which absolutely no one played? Its champion suffers another first round exit after clinching the title 2 weeks ago. Normally players gain confidence after winning a tournament. However, for Dominika, it only seemed to distract her. Maybe the commute from US to London but to the States was too much, but Lepchenko did the same too. This is just another puzzling loss that you get with Cibulkova.

(WC) Aleksandra Wozniak (CAN) d. (13) Jelena Jankovic (SRB) 62 63

Why bother Jelena? Just stop playing.

Carla Suárez Navarro (ESP) d. (15) Sabine Lisicki (GER) 36 63 64

Sabine Sabine Sabine... I know you want to be the best. But I don't think your body agrees with you. It seems like Lisicki has picked up another injury in this match as she suffers an early exit yet again. In addition to her brittle body, her frail mentality is another obstacle that she has to overcome. Crying after every loss just makes you sad and desperate. Maybe Sabine needs to see a sport psychologist because this isn't healthy for her or her fans.
