The quarter-final line up is complete with the completion of 3rd round action! We are now one step closer to the medal playoffs!
Olympics 3rd round:
(1) Victoria Azarenka (BLR) d. (16) Nadia Petrova (RUS) 76(6) 64
(3) Maria Sharapova (RUS) d. (15) Sabine Lisicki (GER) 67(8) 64 63
(4) Serena Williams (USA) d. (13) Vera Zvonareva (RUS) 61 60
(6) Petra Kvitova (CZE) d. Flavia Pennetta (ITA) 63 60
(7) Angelique Kerber (GER) d. Venus Williams (USA) 76(5) 76(5)
(8) Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) d. Daniela Hantuchova (SVK) 64 62
Kim Clijsters (BEL) d. (11) Ana Ivanovic (SRB) 63 64
(14) Maria Kirilenko (RUS) d. Julia Goerges (GER) 76(5) 63
Kim Clijsters (BEL) d. (11) Ana Ivanovic (SRB) 63 64
The only "upset" of yesterday. However, the rankings do not do Kim justice as she was injured for the majority of last and this year. Poor Ana has yet to win a match against the Belgian veteran and it looks to remain that way as Kim is retiring soon. Despite playing well and having better statistics than Kim, Ana still came out short. Poor Ana can only blame it on the luck of the draw. Kim faces Maria Sharapova in the quarter-finals and I'm sure she will give it her all in her next match.
(7) Angelique Kerber (GER) d. Venus Williams (USA) 76(5) 76(5)
Well, Venus did well to make this a close match but I'm afraid the result was never in doubt. Angelique is just riding high on her confidence and she takes out another former number 1 on Wimbledon grass. Venus only has herself to blame as she served 2 double faults in the second tiebreak. You simply cannot gift points like these in a tiebreak. Well, there's still doubles for Venus and I'm sure she will be a hot favourite to medal with Serena.
(3) Maria Sharapova (RUS) d. (15) Sabine Lisicki (GER) 67(8) 64 63
Sharapova avenges her shock loss in Wimbledon by fighting past Sabine Lisicki in 3 sets. Well, Sabine isn't exactly in good form as she was pushed to 3 sets in her opening 2 rounds but it seems like Sabine always brings her best against Sharapova. As usual, Sharapova fought her ass off and emerged the winner. She will now face Kim Clijsters for a place in the semi-finals.
(8) Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) d. Daniela Hantuchova (SVK) 64 62
Caroline wins another match! Well, it would be too much for Daniela to play well for 3 consecutive matches and despite a good showing in the beginning of the match, Daniela imploded. Credit has to be given to Wozniacki for serving well but other than that, Daniela just helped her with her slow movement and crazy errors. Serena Williams is next and I'm afraid it's the end of the road for Caroline.
