Olympics: No fairytale ending for Kim

That's it. Kim's aim of winning a medal was dashed by a ruthless Sharapova. Not that it's unexpected anyway...

Maria Sharapova def. Kim Clijsters 6-2 7-5

Maria was just better in every department than Kim. On grass, Kim's movement is not as potent and her groundstrokes don't have enough sting to hurt Maria. It was never in doubt that Sharapova will win this. Despite a brief fightback in the second set, Kim eventually faltered. However, she did very well considering how limited her preparations were. Still, it will be a disappointment for her to end her career without a medal.

Maria Kirilenko def. Petra Kvitova 7-6(3) 6-3

When Petra is off, she can be horrendous as evidenced today. Kirilenko didn't even have to play that well but Petra just self-imploded. A real letdown by the former Wimbledon champion who has yet to win a title this year. Perhaps she is feels that there is too much burden placed on her as a top player but she's got to get used to it. Well done to Kirilenko for not being intimidated and with her win, Russia is guaranteed a medal.

Other results:

Serena Williams def. Caroline Wozniacki 6-0 6-3
Victoria Azarenka def. Angelique Kerber 6-4 7-5
