Birmingham & Bad Gastein: Catching up

Another day of catch up to do with tons of schedule matches.

Birmingham:

2nd round:

(WC) Melanie South vs. (5) (WC) Jelena Jankovic

Grass season means British players will come out in full force, courtesy of generous wildcards awarded to them. Melanie South is one such player. Every grass season, she will make an annual appearance which normally ends with a first round exit. This year, she managed to win a round which is something really worth celebrating for her, even though it was against brainless ball-basher Lucic. Jelena Jankovic hasn't tasted victory much recently but she should prevail here. If Jelena manages to lose this, I really have no words.

Pick: Jankovic in 2 sets

Urszula Radwanska vs. (2) Sabine Lisicki

Sabine is struggling with her form now and it's certainly a huge task for her facing Radwanska, who just won a grass ITF event the previous week. The problem for Sabine is that she has no plan B. She just whacks every ball and hopes that it will go in. She needs to find a middle ground or else once her Wimbledon points drop off, she's going to be in a lot of trouble.

Pick: Radwanska in 2 sets

Laura Robson vs. (9) Marina Erakovic

Home grown youngster Laura Robson will face 9th seed Marina Erakovic in this interesting match-up. Laura has been hyped as Britain's new hope since winning the juniors Wimbledon a few years ago. Sadly, she hasn't made much of an impression until now. Will she be able to handle the pressure and take out Erakovic? Marina herself is a handy grass-courter. She plays well on this surface and might have too much experience for Laura to handle.

Pick: Erakovic in 3 sets

Bad Gastein: Nothing interesting happening as the tournament is taking their time to finish up their first round matches.

Sure win bets: Petra Martic, Jelena Jankovic, Casey Dellacqua
Upset alert: Johanna Larsson, Sabine Lisicki, Daniela Hantuchova
