Bad Gastein final:
(2) Yanina Wickmayer vs. (7) Alize Cornet
Clay-courter Alize meets Yanina Wickmayer in the finals of Austria. With the tournament littered with early exits, these 2 seeds didn't disappoint. Yanina doesn't really play well on clay, or grass... She's more of a constant. Her game is kind of stagnant which can be a good thing. She will produce consistent results on all surfaces. But a real breakthrough is difficult for her. Cornet is strictly a clay-courter with her loopy forehand. It will be interesting to see if the spinny forehand of Alize can trouble Yanina.
Pick: Wickmayer to blast her way to another Mickey Mouse title.
Birmingham:
With all the rain delays, I have no idea how to write the preview.
Jankovic seems on course to a semi-final clash with Zheng. But if she was to reach the finals, she would have to complete 2 matches and with one more final to play! That's too much to ask of anybody... The other half features 2 Americans and Ekaterina Makarova. Well, that's kind of easy; the American who gets through will get slaughtered by the Russian in the semi-finals. So I predict a Zheng vs Makarova final. What do you think?
If that were to happen, I think the Russian will win just because she has a superior serve. Service is very important on grass and Zheng's weak delivery will hurt her chances. Looks like another grass court title for Makarova.
I think it will rain again in Birmingham.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it looks likely for a Zheng v Makarova final. I was at Birmingham on the Thursday and it was just utterly miserable! I thought they might move some of the matches indoors yesterday because I think they have the facilities to do that... trying to finish off quarters/semis/finals in one day is ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteoops... looks like we were wrong! LOL
