Shockers:
(23) Kaia Kanepi (EST) d. (9) Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) 61 67(3) 63
As expected, Wozniacki gets knocked out by a big hitter. Kanepi needed 5 match points to seal it though. Watching this match will take 10 years away from your life by watching Kanepi desperately trying to close this match out. Leading 6-1 5-1, Kanepi couldn't finish the job but instead tightened up. Caroline was the same stubborn girl who refuses to change her game plan, waiting for Kaia to miss. I'm sorry Caro, at this level, nobody will miss that many balls. Good win for Kaia despite having tremendous trouble to close this out. She stands a very good chance at reaching the quarter-finals.
Varvara Lepchenko (USA) d. (14) Francesca Schiavone (ITA) 36 63 86
Varvara mimics her Madrid victory over Francesca with a marathon win. Facing 4 break points in the final game, she saved them all with brave shots. Really impressive from this American. Varvara is chasing to be the last American to be included in the Olympics team and this seem to spur her to play great tennis. 3 matches and 3 3 set matches. I think she will be depleted for her next match with Kvitova. Nevertheless, great run.
Arantxa Rus (NED) d. (25) Julia Goerges (GER) 76(5) 26 62
Arantxa Rus surprises as she takes out Julia Goerges in 3 sets. I predicted Julia would have trouble with Rus but never expected her to lose. Julia was having a bitch fit by complaining to the umpire about the low light conditions. She even cursed the umpire and ended up losing the lackluster 3rd set by serving 2 double faults. She then almost created drama by not shaking Rus's hand. Julia went straight to the umpire to shake hands. Rus was shocked and shrugged her shoulders before Julia turned around and shook her hand. I never knew Goerges had this attitude which is kind of a turn off. Just play your tennis and don't resort to childish behaviour. Rus, the former junior Roland Garros champion, will meet Kanepi for a chance to advance to the quarter-finals.
