(2) Maria Sharapova def. (21) Sara Errani 6-3 6-2
Maria Sharapova accomplished her career slam by winning the French Open this year. With this, she joins the elite list of only 6 players who have achieved. this. From the start, it was a mis-match. Sharapova came out of the blocks and rapidly established a 4-0 lead. Errani was bewildered and looked nervous. However, when she started relaxing and swinging freely, the match got a little bit more exciting. Still, the result was never in doubt. Plucky Errani saved 2 match points with her clever drop shots but wasn't able to save the third as Sharapova powered to her 3rd clay court title this year. I would have never thought Sharapova could have won a red clay title 3 years ago but the improvements made by Maria was very apparent. Her movement on clay has improved tremendously and she is no longer moving like a cow on ice. Kudos to her for putting in the hard work. As for Errani, she will make her top 10 debut at number 9 next week. Let's see if her success on clay can translate to other surfaces.
