(Q) Daria Gavrilova (RUS) d. Yanina Wickmayer (BEL) 61 62

Shockers:

Tsvetana Pironkova (BUL) d. (1) Agnieszka Radwanska (POL) 62 64

Grass GOAT Tsvetana takes out the top seed easily; winning in straight sets. As the weeks go by, Radwanska is looking more and more unstable and I do think she doesn't think she deserves to be in the top 3. Which is true given that she hasn't even reached a Grand Slam semi-final yet and has totally disappointing Slam results for the past year. Agnieszka needs to cut down on the tournaments played as she's showing signs of exhaustion, which is never good for any player. This loss will make Radwanska more vulnerable and she will be another seed looking at an early exit in Wimbledon.

Ekaterina Makarova (RUS) d. (2) Petra Kvitova (CZE) 75 64

The Wimbledon champion is embarassed in her first round by Makarova, a former champion here 2 years ago. Makarova had nothing to lose and rightly went out swinging freely. Maybe she just needs more practice on this surface but Petra needs to be careful here. Everyone will be swinging freely against her as they all have nothing to lose, while Petra has. The Czech needs to find a plan B when her shots are not landing in. Sadly, I doubt she ever thinks that much on court. Another seed in danger of crashing out early in Wimbledon?

Christina McHale (USA) d. (3) Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) 61 67(7) 64

Well, despite being a former champion here, Wozniacki doesn't look impressive on grass. On top of that, she has lost the aura of a top player. Players now know that if they implement their more impressive game on Caroline, she's toast. That's what happened today with McHale. Christina isn't the most comfortable grass court player but she imposed her game and came out with the results. Seems like anyone can beat Wozniacki these days. Great for tennis? You betcha. Caroline's days as a top player are numbered. Good riddance.

Sofia Arvidsson (SWE) d. (7/WC) Jelena Jankovic (SRB) 62 36 64

Jankovic's disappointing season continues. Not really a shock here. Perhaps she needs a new coach, a new mental approach, a new racket etc. Something needs to change or else she's going to spiral into a free fall. And with results like this, it's tough to continue playing especially being on tour for the past 10 years. Let's see if Jelena can wake up in time for Wimbledon. If not, she's going to retire at the end of this year I think.

(Q) Daria Gavrilova (RUS) d. Yanina Wickmayer (BEL) 61 62

That's what happens when you play a clay event before a grass event. Totally not used to the surface, Yanina crashes out to unknown Daria Gavrilova in the first round. As a tennis player, you should always concentrate on peaking for the Grand Slams. Not playing irrelevant events which have no consequences to your performance in Slams. Yanina learnt her lesson the hard way as she proceeds to Wimbledon with no wins on grass and zero confidence.
